Joseph A. Calcagno, Sr., born May 26, 1952, in Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025.
Joseph attended St. Paul of the Cross and Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City, NJ. He was an incredibly gifted athlete, able to pick up and excel at any sport. He had a particular love and talent for baseball and basketball. He was a beloved coach, admired for both his knowledge of the game and his dedication to the players he mentored. He is remembered in “The Courts” as an athlete and a role model and for his commitment to maintaining lifelong friendships
In addition to his athletic talents, Joseph was a brilliant mathematician who built his career working with numbers.
He is remembered by his family as a generous, loyal and principled man with a devotion to his family and a look that could convey what a thousand words could not. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Karen Tippy Calcagno. Although her loss was profound, Joseph continued to devote himself to his family and embraced life with warmth, finding meaning in time spent with those he loved most, his son Joseph A. Calcagno II, and his grandchildren Cooper and Avery.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Donato and Phyllis Calcagno. He is survived by his brother, Michael Calcagno as well as many brothers and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews and a great-niece and a great nephew. He is also survived by his dear friend of many years, Ninette Petruzziello
