Emblem

Arturo (Babe) Liberty of Saddle Brook passed on June 8, 2024 at the age of 93. Babe was born October 10, 1930, in Paterson, New Jersey and resided in Saddle Brook since 1961. He was a US Marine Corp Korean War Veteran serving from 1948 to 1951 and received a Purple Heart Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star, Korean Service Medal, and Navy Occupation Service Medal. He worked at Merck & Company, Inc. for 31 years and retired in 1993.

He is predeceased by his mother Angelina, father Dominick Liberty and nine siblings.  His wife, Dorothy Liberty passed away in 2015. Babe is survived by his beloved daughter Deb Cannariato and son-in-law Charlie, his daughter Brenda Lewis and her fiancé Chris Stone, his son Vinny Liberty and daughter-in-law Christine, and his granddaughter Victoria Liberty.

Babe was a respected baseball coach from Little League and Babe Ruth to semi-pro teams. On any given Sunday, you could find him at Victor Field teaching anyone who wanted to learn to “play ball.” The Saddle Brook Colonials referred to Babe as “La Machine” as he would pitch batting practice to both teams even during double headers, while never tiring. Throughout the years Babe was a member of several social clubs in Paterson and a current member of the Do-gooder’s Club in Totowa. Many residents remember Babe “all around town” in his 1985 maroon Eldorado which was prominently parked daily in his private parking space at the Saddle Brook Diner.

Cremation will be private with no service as the family respects their dad’s wishes. The family requests that you remember Babe as they do. A selfless modest man, coach to thousands and a hero to many - truly a Saddle Brook legend. To honor their dad, they also encourage all to support your local Little League organizations, Wounded Warrior Project, and the American Cancer Society
